I started acting late in life: I wasn't 21 when I started and so I felt like I had a lot to catch up on and didn't have time to really meander through my learning processes. So it was probably a year I think, after I started acting that I went to New York to study. And then another year later I went to Los Angeles, because I figured if I'm going to do this, I'm going to do it, I'm going to give it everything that I have. Hide

I'm a big believer in: at the moment of commitment, the universe conspires to assist you. Meaning that when I make a decision that something's going to happen and I don't fret about how it's going to happen, it happens. Now, whether you believe that happens because the universe listens to you and then magical fairy dust comes down and suddenly things change, or whether you believe that by focusing on something, you suddenly are more aware of all the possible answers and then you're able to pick one, or maybe it's a combination of both, I'm not really sure but, I do know that it's worked for me over and over again. I continuously make the choice to not take day jobs that are going to fill all of my time because I don't want to give up my 10,000 hours...By 10,000 hours I am referring to the concept Malcolm Gladwell wrote about [in Outliers] wherein after 10,000 hours at anything you achieve, essentially, mastery. [Acting] is similar to being an athlete. It feels a lot like when I was a cheerleader because the payoff comes and goes: it comes moment to moment, so one minute I'm like, "Oh this feels so great I just accomplished something," and the next minute I just fell on my face. Hide

When I get really clear about what the big picture, or goal is in any situation, then I'm able to find it in a super short period of time, but when I say 'I need to move out of here; what am I going to do about it' and I start going crazy trying to determine all the minuscule steps in between point A and point B, it doesn't work. Because I'm not open to all the possibilities that I'm not thinking of. Hide

As actors...the game that we're in is so expensive to pull anything off, that you have to do favours for each other...that's what I mean about the equity with people, it's really important that when you're starting your career that you are doing as much as you can for everyone you meet - to build up that equity. Comedy and drama, all of it - fine art, music - it opens people up in ways that normal life doesn't allow them to be open. That's why actors need to be so open and so vulnerable...when you're out there and you're performing...you have to give ten times what you want the audience to give back to you. Hide
