Brimstone

Description
A triumphant epic of survival and a tale of powerful womanhood and resistance against the unforgiving cruelty of a hell on earth. Our heroine is Liz (Dakota Fanning), carved from the beautiful wilderness, full of heart and grit, hunted by a vengeful Preacher (Guy Pearce) - a diabolical zealot and her twisted nemesis. But Liz is a genuine survivor; she's no victim - a woman of fearsome strength who responds with astonishing bravery to claim the better life she and her daughter deserve. Fear not. Retribution is coming.

Exhausting, pretentious, and tedious. It's one of the most painfully boring, overlong and disappointing Westerns since Heaven's Gate.

Though this Western is interesting and artistically daring, it's far too brutal and sadistic (and far too long) to recommend for casual viewing; it requires strong resolve and a stomach to match.

I'm all for heroic exertion in pursuit of one's art, but in this case I wish Koolhoven had tried therapy first.

Gruesome and dark as it can be. But could I stop watching? Not me!

For all the visceral depictions of hatred and violence and human destruction, it feels as if the director is chasing his own tail and forgetting about making it all mean something.

[Director Koolhoven] blends the grand idea of divine retribution from Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider with the noir grimness of HBO's Deadwood, to make something all his own.

Fanning is in fine form as a woman who can't vocalize her emotions, though it's Pearce here who steals the show.

The religious fundamentalism ideologically rooted in this country finds allegorical terror in the diabolical Preacher. Reveling in the brutality, fanaticism and warped self-righteousness ultimately at the dark, messianic heart of US exceptionalism today.

The carnage pushes you away (and wears you down), even as the genre, industrious cast, beautiful landscapes and stark, often striking visuals pull you in.

Ostentatiously unpleasant, mired in a grim solemnity nowhere near as intelligent nor enlightening as the film seems to think it is.

There's an odor that lingers long after "Brimstone"'s final fade-out. And it's not sulfur.

A film that ostensibly aims to expose the subjugation of women spends an awful lot of time hurting and humiliating them.
