You don't have to be enthralled with the technical complexity and logistics involved in sending a crewed mission to Mars to be captivated by The First, but it helps.

Visually compelling with a nicely pensive music score - courtesy of Colin Stetson of Arcade Fire and Bon Iver - "The First" is otherwise plodding and padded.

Full of high-minded ambition and the kind of uplifting narrative one used to find on "The West Wing," "The First"... looks like a series to savor.

Some may say it's out of touch, but really, "The First" feels like a pioneer amid a sea of narrative cynicism - a look past the present to where we need to be, and how we can get there.
